What causes the Skin the Age?

The nature in which a person’s skin will age is influenced by intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (environmental) factors.

Intrinsic causes are genetically predetermined and include hormonal influences like menopause. Menopause can cause skin to age as skin cell turnover rate declines. This impacts the skin structure resulting in the loss of fat tissue, skin hydration and dermal collagen and elastin production. Extrinsic or environmental factors can include accumulated exposure to sunlight, smoking, poor diet, or harsh weather.

What does Ageing Skin look like?

Ageing skin is often identified by the appearance of:

• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Thin skin
• Textural changes and/or discolouration
• Baggy eyelids and jawline
• A yellowish, sallow complexion (often seen in smokers)

Treatment Options For Ageing Skin

Pearl Fractional Laser Treatments

This is the “gold standard” treatment for laser rejuvenation. This is an ablative form of fractional laser meaning that it targets both the epidermis and dermis by penetrating the laser light through columns known as “microthermal treatment zones (MTZ). As a result, this not only treats the signs of ageing you see on the surface of your skin but also is able to regenerate collagen production, replacing the old collagen with newer, healthier collagen.

Skin Peels

These treatments encourage a mild exfoliation to the surface layers of the skin, which improves the skin’s overall barrier function, increases collagen and elastin production as well as improves the overall hydration level in the skin.

Collagen Induction Therapy

This particular procedure is commonly referred to as ‘Skin Needling’. We use a hand held device that has titanium microneedles that are 2mm in length. These microneedles penetrate deep into the dermal tissue creating channels that are responsible for increasing collagen and elastin production. As a result, the dermal tissue thickens, which provides more volume to the skin as well as significantly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Long to See Results And Are The They Permanent?

Any treatment that is designed at targeting collagen stimulation will take around three months to see results. These results are permanent however, over time the skin will still go through its normal ageing process and if not looked after, this process can be accelerated by environmental and lifestyle factors.
