Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoos are significantly increasing in popularity; but thankfully, these decisions are no longer permanent thanks to laser tattoo removal.

Our Approach To Tattoo Removal

At the Cosmetic Refinement Clinic, we offer two methods for the removal of unwanted tattoos:

1. Q-Switch Laser: This is the primary method employed at our clinic and is recognized as the gold standard in tattoo removal. The Q-switch laser effectively targets various pigment colors, particularly black, dark blue, red, and green. This method is both scientifically and medically proven to provide safe and efficient results.

2. Fractional Laser: In addition to the Q-switch laser, we utilize a fractional laser to enhance treatment outcomes. This laser works by creating microscopic wounds in the skin, promoting healing and assisting in the removal process of residual ink, thus improving the overall effectiveness of the therapy.

Together, these advanced technologies allow for a comprehensive approach to tattoo removal, tailored to treat tattoos of various colour.

FAQs on Laser Tattoo Removal

How Is A Tattoo Removed By Laser?

The Q-switch laser emits a specific wavelength of light at nanosecond speed which is highly attracted to the tattoo pigment that is seen on the surface of the skin.

This process causes the pigment to fragment into smaller particles (known as photoacoustic effect), which are then eliminated via the body’s natural processes (lymphatic system).

When we incorporate a two-step modality approach, the fractionated laser is applied first to create coagulated zones within the skin, helping to break down and eliminate unwanted pigment. This process enhances the absorption and effectiveness of the subsequent Q-switched laser treatment, resulting in more efficient tattoo ink reduction.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

To simply put it, yes!

To minimise discomfort during treatment, clients are advised to apply a topical anaesthetic cream 30 minutes prior to their appointment. Throughout the procedure, we also use a Zimmer cooling device to help alleviate the heat discomfort generated by the laser.

Following treatment, clients may experience sensations similar to a severe sunburn.

Applying ice packs intermittently for the remainder of the day can help reduce heat discomfort and provide relief more quickly.

What Will The Area Look Like Post-Treatment?

What you can expect following treatment will depend on the method used for tattoo removal. When only a Q-switched laser is used, the treated area may appear mildly swollen with some surrounding redness. After a few days, mild crusting may develop. It is important not to pick at these scabs, as doing so may increase the risk of unwanted scarring. In most cases, the area will heal completely within one to three weeks.

When a fractionated laser is incorporated into the treatment, pinpoint bleeding may occur due to the removal of microscopic columns of tissue. As the skin heals, these areas will gradually form small crusts or scabs. Swelling and redness may also be more pronounced when both lasers are combined, as this approach is designed to enhance treatment effectiveness.

Following each treatment, specific aftercare instructions will be provided to help minimise downtime and support optimal healing.

How Many Laser Treatments Are Needed To Remove A Tattoo?

The number of treatments required can depend on multiple factors such as;

* The tattoo: The colours used and if these colours are layered

* How old the tattoo is

* Its location on the body

* The overall health of the person

* If fractional laser is incorporated:  Incorporating the fractionated laser prior to treating with the Q-switch laser results in fewer treatments being required due to its aggressive nature.

Who Can Have This Treatment?

A consultation is required prior to commencing treatment.

At the consultation appointment, we discuss the client’s medical history, the specific characteristics of the tattoo itself as well as whats involved with the treatment, including pre and post treatment requirements.

All questions are answered during this consultation, and pricing is discussed and determined at this time.
