How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is a popular, non-invasive and highly effective treatment method for removing unwanted hair. It utilises concentrated laser energy which targets the hair within the body’s hair follicles. The hair then absorbs the laser light, causing thermal damage and preventing further hair growth in the future.

Laser Hair Removal treatment works by disabling hairs in their “active growth hair phase”. Given that initially all hair is not in the same growth phase, three to six treatment sessions may be necessary to disable all the hair follicles in a target area.

When treating unwanted facial hair, the period between each treatment is ideally every four weeks. On the other hand, when treating unwanted hair on the body, treatments are performed in six week intervals. Periodic ‘touch-up’ sessions may be required to reduce unwanted hair. Generally, patients see a 10% to 25% reduction in hair following their first treatment session.

You can successfully remove unwanted hair using lasers on most parts of the body, especially on the legs, bikini line, underarms, and facial areas such as the chin, and upper lip. Though more popular with women, it is becoming a sought-after treatment for men. Laser hair removal is a major contributor to body confidence for everyone.

Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Laser hair removal is an effective treatment for reducing the number of unwanted hairs in a target area. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as permanent 100% hair removal.

By heating and vaporising the hair within the hair follicle, new hairs will be prevented from growing back for a significantly longer period of time in comparison to waxing and shaving. Even when these hairs do begin to grow back, they will be noticeably fewer in number, as well as finer and lighter in appearance.

Does It Work On All Types of Skin & Hair?

Laser hair removal can successfully be performed on all skin types however it can only treat dark-coloured hair.

Typically, laser hair removal is most effective for those who have dark hair and fair skin. The effectiveness of laser hair removal is closely correlated with hair colour due to the light being more attracted to hair that is dark in colour. Unfortunately, treating unwanted hair that is either blonde, white or grey is not usually successful.

Where Can Laser Hair Removal Be Performed?

Laser hair removal can be performed on most areas of the body, even those more sensitive areas. It is most commonly used to remove hair from highly visible parts of the body, such as the legs, underarms, bikini line and face.

How To Prepare For A Laser Hair Removal Treatment

It is recommended that you shave the target area the one to two days before your scheduled appointment. This will enhance the overall effectiveness as well as eliminate any discomfort felt during the treatment. Furthermore doing this will significantly reduce the risk of surface skin damage from burnt hairs.

Avoid direct sun exposure seven days prior and post treatment. Between each session, make sure the treated areas are protected from the sun by applying sunscreen.

Self-tanning creams and makeup can be used as desired. However avoid applying self tanning products the week prior to your appointment to ensure there is no tanning residue left on the surface of the skin.

What Can You Experience Post Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

After a laser hair removal treatment, the area may appear slightly red and bumpy (similar to what you may see post waxing). In the event of any discomfort, ice or aloe vera gel can be applied to the treated area.

Over the following two weeks any hair that wasn’t initially vaporised during treatment will gradually fall out.
