Persistent tightness or rough texture often indicates your skin barrier is struggling to hold onto hydration and protective lipids.
At CRC, we frequently see clients who believe their skin is simply “dry,” when in fact the issue may be more complex. Understanding the type of dryness you’re experiencing is the first step toward correcting it effectively and restoring balance.
Why Skin Becomes Drier With Age
As we age, natural sebum production and barrier lipids decline. The epidermis gradually becomes thinner, and the skin’s ability to retain moisture reduces.
From our 50s onwards, dryness becomes increasingly common but environmental factors can accelerate the process at any age, including:
- Air conditioning and indoor heating
- Climate and seasonal changes
- Certain medications
- Unsuitable or overly active skincare
When the barrier is compromised, the skin loses moisture more easily, leading to tightness, flaking, sensitivity and rough texture.

Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin
Knowing which type of dryness you’re experiencing helps us prescribe the correct treatment and homecare.
Dry Skin (Lacking Oil)
Characteristics:
- Lacks oil and sebum
- Often dull, rough or sensitive
What it needs:
Oil-rich, barrier-supportive care to replenish lipids and strengthen the skin barrier.

Dehydrated Skin (Lacking Water)
Characteristics:
- Lacks water (but may still produce oil)
- Feels tight or flaky
- May have visible pores
What it needs:
- Water-rich, barrier-strengthening formulations that increase hydration levels while protecting the barrier.

The First Step Is Correct Diagnosis
Treating dehydration with heavy oils won’t resolve the issue. Likewise, treating true dryness with lightweight hydration alone may leave the skin feeling compromised.
At CRC, we assess your skin thoroughly to determine whether you’re experiencing oil deficiency, water loss, or a combination of both. From there, we tailor a treatment and homecare plan designed to restore comfort, resilience and long-term skin health.
If your skin feels persistently tight or uncomfortable, it’s worth addressing properly. Healthy skin starts with a strong barrier.
