Pigmentation Conditions & Laser..

Skin pigmentation occurs when there is an alteration in colour of the skin as a result of abnormal melanin production occurring in the body.

There are three types of pigment found within the skin. These are classified based on wherethe pigment is located within the skin.

Epidermal Pigment; superficial pigmentation such as freckles, post inflammatory hyperpigmentaion and solar lentigos.

Dermal Pigment; includes conditions such as moles and beauty marks.

Mixed (Combination of both epidermal & dermal pigment); a common condition associated with this is melasma.

Factors that can influence the abnormal production of melanin include:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes
  • UV exposure
  • Skin lesions, including injury, trauma, infection, or inflammation
  • Acne
  • Certain medications
  • Topical agents, including some skincare products

These factors can contribute to the overproduction or uneven distribution of melanin.

When treating pigmentation with laser, the laser works by targeting the excess melanin in the skin using specific wavelengths of light. The laser energy breaks down the pigment into smaller particles, which are then naturally removed by the body.

This process helps reduce pigmentation concerns such as sun spots, freckles, and post-inflammatory pigmentation, resulting in a clearer and more even skin tone. Multiple treatments and consistent sun protection are often recommended for best results.

FAQs On Pigmentation Laser

How Does Laser Treat Unwanted Pigmentation?

Laser uses a specific wavelength of light that selectively targets melanin within the skin. The melanin absorbs this light without damaging any of the surrounding skin. The laser heats up and shatters the pigment to finer particles, allowing the unwanted pigment to either be drawn up to the surface of the skin or instigating the body’s lymphatic system to eliminate the unwanted pigment.

What Pigment Conditions Can Laser Treat?

Lasers can treat various skin conditions and concerns.

Common pigmented skin conditions laser can effectively treat include:

  • Sun Damage
  • Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte
  • Ephelides
  • Solar Lentigo
  • Cafe au Lait

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Most places on the face or body (apart from mucosal areas) where the pigment condition or concern is present.

Is This Treatment Painful?

Majority of clients feel a mild discomfort similar to a mild “pin-pricking” sensation in conjunction with heat due to the thermal response from the laser within the skin.

We utilise a cool air device to provide comfort to our clients whilst protecting the skin.

Overall, majority of pigmentation laser treatments are non-invasive, however discomfort levels can vary from client to client.

How Do I Know If Pigmentation Laser Is The Right Treatment Option For Me?

Laser therapy is an effective and non-invasive treatment option to remove or minimise unwanted pigment on your skin. However, in order to know which laser will be the most effective, the type of pigmentation needs to be correctly diagnosed in an initial skin consultation.
