Sun Protection & Habits
As we approach the warmer seasons, it’s time to embrace the sunshine and outdoor activities. However, with the arrival of sunny days comes the critical need for sun protection and building healthy habits to safeguard your skin.
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world due to the strength of our sun’s UV rays. While many people are aware of this, there’s still a tendency to overlook or underestimate the importance of consistent sun safety. Simply using sunscreen daily or avoiding sunbathing isn’t enough. Let’s explore what proper sun protection truly entails and how to make it a part of your daily routine.
Understanding UV Exposure
Did you know UV rays can still affect your skin even when you’re indoors or on cloudy days? UV rays are present as long as there is light. Everyday activities like:
Gardening
Walking the dog
Hanging out laundry
Grabbing coffee outside
…all add up to UV exposure.
Even sitting indoors near a window can expose you to UV rays, as glass reflects and lets these rays through. According to the Anti-Cancer Council, just 6 minutes of UV exposure daily is enough to contribute to skin damage over time.
5 Steps to Sun Protection
To properly protect your skin from harmful UV rays, it’s essential to follow all five sun safety steps. Here’s how:
1. SLIP – Wear Protective Clothing
Choose appropriate clothing that covers your skin.
Use the SunSmart app to determine which areas need protection based on your outfit.
2. SLOP – Apply Sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield against UVA and UVB rays.
Reapply every 1–2 hours, as sunscreen wears off over time.
Apply multiple layers for effective protection.
3. SLAP – Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat
Choose a hat with a brim of at least 7.5 cm for adults or 6 cm for children.
Ensure it covers your face, ears, and neck.
Opt for a dense woven fabric to block UV rays.
4. SEEK – Find Shade
Stay under dense tree canopies or bring an SPF-rated shelter to the beach or park.
5. SLIDE – Use Sunglasses
Choose SPF-rated sunglasses that fully cover the sides of your face and eyes.
Consult an optometrist if you’re unsure about the right level of UV protection.
Make Sun Protection a Daily Habit
Following just one or two of these steps isn’t enough. To fully protect your skin, it’s vital to incorporate all five steps into your routine. Consistency is key—not only for your well-being but also to set an example for children. Remember, they learn by watching us, so lead by example!
