Let’s be real, navigating clinical treatments can feel overwhelming. At Cosmetic Refinement Clinic, we understand how confusing the skincare world can be, especially when you’re ready to step up your in-clinic treatments. That’s why we only offer evidence-based treatments that are backed by science. No fads. No fluff. Just real results.
And just so you know, Hayley and I (Georgie) are both degree-qualified in Dermal Therapies. We’re here to provide expert care, honest guidance, and a genuine commitment to helping you feel confident in your skin.
If you’re new to the world of clinical treatments, or you’re looking to take things up a notch, Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is a fantastic place to start.
Things to Consider Before Starting CIT
Before diving into skin needling, there are a few things worth checking off:
-
Do you have any social events coming up? (You’ll need a bit of downtime.)
-
Are you using quality cosmeceutical skincare?
-
Are you taking any medications that might affect your skin’s ability to heal?
-
Can you allow 2–3 days for some healing time post-treatment?
And most importantly, we require a current skin consultation before beginning any invasive treatment. During this consult, we go over everything with you so you’re fully informed and empowered to make the right decision for yourself. There’s never any pressure to proceed with a treatment that doesn’t feel right for you.

What Is Collagen Induction Therapy?
Also known as microneedling, skin needling, or sometimes even home rolling, this treatment has been around longer than you might think.
-
Skin needling can be traced back centuries to traditional acupuncture in China.
-
In 1995, Dr. Des Fernandes popularised the treatment to improve skin texture and reduce lines.
-
By 1997, he invented the manual roller and stamping device, helping deliver consistent results through carefully spaced microneedles.
How Does It Work?
When those tiny microneedles penetrate the skin, they create controlled “micro-injuries” in the epidermis and dermis. This triggers your body’s natural wound healing response and activates growth factors that lead to tissue regeneration.
These include:
-
Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF)
-
Platelet-Derived Growth Factors (PDGF)
-
Fibroblast Growth Factors (FGF)
As these growth factors get to work, they support the production of new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of youthful, resilient skin.

What to Expect Post-Treatment
The clinical endpoints (aka how we know the treatment has worked) include:
-
Short-term bleeding
-
Mild to moderate swelling (oedema)
-
Redness (erythema)
-
Heat or warmth in the area
These responses are completely normal and usually last for 48 to 72 hours post-treatment.
After your session, we go through your aftercare instructions with you and provide everything you’ll need. We’re also just a text or call away if you have any questions throughout your healing journey.
Who Is CIT Ideal For?
Collagen Induction Therapy is a great treatment for:
-
Skin texture concerns
-
Enlarged pores
-
Scarring (including acne scars)
-
General skin rejuvenation
Treatment frequency varies, but a series of 3–4 treatments, spaced 2–4 weeks apart, can produce fantastic results—depending on your individual skin goals.
Not Ready for In-Clinic CIT? Try a Home Roller
If you’re curious about CIT but not quite ready to commit to the in-clinic version, the home roller is a great introduction.
-
It helps enhance the absorption of your skincare by creating tiny superficial channels in the skin.
-
Not as deep as clinic devices, but still effective—especially for scar tissue and pigmentation.
-
Use daily or every other day (or just twice a week if you’re sensitive).
-
Perfect for getting your skin used to device-based treatments.
